<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">Biodiesel is a substitute for diesel fuels which is used in trucks mostly in the United States. Usually soybean is used in the U.S. Vegetable oil and other natural oils are used to make biodiesel (used cooking oil). No petroleum is necessary but it can be mixed so that you have a blended biodiesel. It is available in all 50 states. It is better for your engine and makes the exhaust smell like french fries.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">Benefits:
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">1) Better for the engine, environment, and human health.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">2) New source of income for rural farmers-helps rural economies.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">3) Simpler to make than ethanol and can be done right on a soybean farm.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">4) Reduce smog, ozone reduction, acid rain, cancer, and asthma.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">5) Burns 75% cleaner than normal diesel, reduce carbon monoxide, eliminates sulphur dioxide emissions. Reduction in greenhouse gases contributing to climate change.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">Problems:
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">1) Sustainability issues with growing soybean. Increase of soybean deforestation or environmental changes may occur.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">2) The efficiency in making biodiesel is not very good even though it is better than making diesel itself.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">3) There are limits on production from land use, water availability, and competition of food crops.
4) Major technological advance would have to occur to completely replace diesel as the leading current source as compared to biodiesel.
Mitochondrial Eve is the maternal ancestor of all living humans. Mitochondria are the tiny organelles inside of human cells that contain their own genome. Each person's mitochondrial genome is inherited from his or her own mother making mitochondrial lineages maternal. The is one type of DNA within a humans body along with chromosomal DNA. Every human's mitochondrial DNA can then be traced back to one source so all humans would then be related. It is important to emphasize that there was not only one woman living at that time. This woman has been estimated to have lived 150,000 to 200,000 years ago. Many other women are believed to have lived during this time. It is not known why there is only one mitochondrial DNA strand of humans today.

With all humans being related genetically, why then do we have a diversity of looks ago people such as skin color, hair color, eye, color, face shape, etc? We would attribute human differences to evolution. Just like the evolution we can study in species, humans have adapted to different environments over time. The mutations that occur in DNA through reproduction affect the next generation of species. We have natural selection, genetic drifts, bottleneck effects, and the founder effect from geographic isolation that plays into these changes. Overtime, the traits humans carry have been mutations that have survived over time as well as adaptations to our new environments.
It is made up of black shale. The importance of this area of land is great for scientists because it gives evidence of earlier species and how they evolved to the organisms we have today. Over 60,000 unique fossils have been found with arthropods being the most predominate. Worms, crinoids, sea cucumbers, chordates, and others with no shell. It is difficult to preserve soft-bodied organisms so the importance of the Burgess Shale is great. There seems to be an explosion of species all at once which would go against the slow evolution of species that Darwin had concluded. The phyla of species we have today almost all can be traced to the sudden emergence of species during the Cambrian period. Thus this gives evidence to refute the theory of all animals be connected to one another and gradually forming a variety of species from one organism over time. Some even find this as evidence for a supernatural being having created and placed fully formed organisms on the Earth.
Communities may want to look over the advantages and disadvantages in deciding to develop a dog park.

Advantages:

Dog Social Interaction- Dogs can interact socially with other dogs in an environment where they may not normally spend time with other dogs. Also, dogs can interact with people that they may not normally interact with giving them better socialiablity with other dogs and as well as people.

People Social Interaction- People can meet and interact with other people. A common interest of dogs can bring people together and create friendships.

Dog Mental and Physcial Activity- Off-leash exercise allows the dogs to get enough physical activity in especially for hyperactive dogs. Physical exercise can lessen prevalence of destructive behaviors in dogs and stimulating mental activity.

People Education- Owners can observe other dog interactions as well as learn from more experienced owners in order to adopt and/or stop particular aspects of owning and training a dog.

Positive Environment- A positive environment is created through a common interest of those in the park. Other interests are not allowed in the park thus, things like skateboards and bikes are not a distraction for the dogs or owners.

Disadvantages:

People may be exposed to agressive dogs, hazards created by dogs, lawsuits from dog fights, and potential parasites.

Dogs may be exposed to agressive dogs, parasites and diseases, injury, and dangerous small-large dog interactions.

Abuse of park from individuals in the community that do not understand the concept of a dog park such as not cleaning up after their dog, leaving dog unattended, allowing their dog to engage in inappropriate behavior.

Potential noise issues as well as potential liability issues.

Weighing these advantages and disadvantages are necessary to the decision process for a community possibly putting in a dog park.

Amphioxus (sometimes called Lancelets): These little guys are found burrowed under the sand in shallow areas of the tropical and temperate seas. In Asia, they are harvested as food for humans as well as animals. These fish-like vertebrates are very important because they give us more information on the origin of vertebrates. They grow between 5-7 centimeters long with a semi-translucent body and have no paired fins or limbs. A poor tail fin is present but swimming is not one of their strengths.

Some common findings within Amphioxus and vertebrates are a hollow nerve cord and blocked muscles. Some differences in Amphioxus are the dorsal nerve cord is not protected by bone but rather a notochord which is a tightly packed cylindar of cells that makes a tough rod. They do not have a true brain, eyes, or contain any complex sense organs like true vertebrates.

Amphioxus have cirri, the thin tentacle-looking strands coming from their mouth, that act as sensory device and filter the water passing into their bodies. They also do not have any respiratory system, a circulatory system is present but does not contain a heart or even any blood cells.

The differences in structure of the body for these vertebrates give clues to how vertebrates came about at first. It also give us an understanding of what type of systems within the body were necessary for early vertebrates and how they changed over time to the vertebrates we have today.

We found some wild ginger while walking on our trail at Hitchiti Experimental Forest. Asarum, is also known as wild ginger. Asarum has kidney-shaped leaves and bear brownish or red flowers. It is called wild ginger because it smells and tastes similar to ginger root even though they really are not related. The plant can be used as a spice but it is a diuretic, causing an increase in urination. Wild ginger grows in moist, shaded areas and is sometimes grown in shaded gardens because its leaves are an attractive ground covering.

Megafloods have the power to create interestingly unique features within the landscape. The unique landscape of the Scablands that varies across the land in Washington was created from the effects of a megaflood. But what would cause a megaflood?

It was determined that glaciers leftover from the Ice Age may have traveled down from the Canadian region and created massive dams by being jammed in between two mountains. Over time these dams would be weathered and pressure would begin to build up. Supercooled water can cause the glacier to break apart and give way to the built up pressure. Glaciers have cracks within the ice. As water moves through the glacier cracks friction is cause against the ice from moving through tiny spaces and be sucked through causing the ice to heat up and even larger cracks to form. The ice begins to breakdown and the glacial dam gives way. All the built up water behind the glacial dam travels at fast speeds over long distances. These large or megafloods would travel out to the Pacific ocean very quickly thus creating the landscap of the Scablands in just a day, even a matter of hours.

The first is the Ridge and Valley geologic region which is in the northwest corner of the state. Limestone, sandstone, shale and other sedimentary rocks are found there. These rocks have yielded limestone used for construction, barite, ochre, and some coal.

The second is the Blue Ridge geologic region which is what makes up the North Georgia mountains. Metamorphic rocks are found here. They are sedimentary or igneous rocks that have been metamorphosed and also include metavolcanic rocks. Granite and diabase. Gold was mined in the 1800's and marble as well as talc are produced from the region.
There are huge sand dunes to climb up as well as a beautiful beach to lay and play on. We would even go up some saturdays with a group of people from church and clean up the beach area. I still go up to the Indiana Dunes when I see my friends during the summer.

Decomposition is the process of converting dead organic matter into simpler and smaller compounds. This is the main source of nutrition for trees within the forest. The main products from complete decomposition are carbon dioxide, water, and inorganic ions (like ammonium, nitrate, phosphate, and sulfate). Insects, worms, bacteria, and fungi carrry out these processes at the surface of soil and underneath the soil surface. Temperature and soil moisture affect the rate of decomposition since this process is carried out by bacteria and fungi. The higher the temperature, the higher the rate of decomposition. Decomposition still does occur even under the snow. If soil moisture is low, decomposition is inhibited from bacteria and fungi drying out. Also, decomposition is slow in wet soils because anerobic conditions occur which are shorter than aerobic conditions.

Leaf litter decomposition can be measured by the litter bag technique. A pre-measured quantity is placed within the mesh bag which is placed within the litter layer of the forest floor. The bags can be measured of time to determine the amount of mass lost from decomposition. They are allowed to be exposed to normal temperature and moisture fluctuations while being decomposed by insects and microorganisms.

The body maintains a blood sugar concentration (blood glucose level) between 64.8 and 104.4 mg/dL. The amount of glucose (sugar) found within the blood is the blood sugar concentration. The body regulates the blood glucose level in order to sustain a metabolic homeostasis. Glucose provides most of the body's energy for the cells in a body. Glucose moves from the intestines or liver to the body cells through the bloodstream and is able to be absorbed into the cells through the hormone insulin, which is produced through the pancreas. Blood glucose levels fluctuate throughout the day, usually be lowest in the morning before the first meal and rise after meals for an hour or two. Levels outside the normal range of blood glucose levels are indicators of medical conditions such as hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia.

After eating a meal, the level can rise to 140 mg/dL for non-diabetics. Insulin cause cells in the body to take up the glucose from the blood. It is necessary to have insulin to remove the excess glucose since it can be fatal to have too much glucose. So blood sugar levels go up once you have eaten since there is a high amount of glucose or sugar coming into the body. Insulin begins to kick in to take up the glucose in order to lower the blood sugar levels and bring the body back to a homeostatic state.

Blood sugar levels being controlled by insulin can then be considered a negative feedback loop since the increased effect of insulin prohibits an increase in the blood sugar levels. The goal is to get back to homeostasis or below. To make the system become normal again.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The soil I think is most interesting is Oxisols. Oxisols is a very weathered soil. You can find it in intertropical regions of the world. They are rich in Iron and Aluminum minerals and deficient in most other minerals. Globally, Oxisols only take up approximately 7.5% of ice-free land area. Hawaii is the only place in the U.S. where this soil can be found-approximately 0.02% of land area in U.S. There is low fertility within this soil but this can be compensated with treatments of lime and fertilizers. There are five suborders within the type Oxisols: Aquox, Torrox, Ustox, Perox, and Udox.
This allows you to see the depth of the soil and the type of soil the further you go down in depth. The change of color of the soil as well as the change in texture of the soil can be seen telling you about the type of soil and change of soil type over time.

The bigger holes in the mesh/grate are at the top and the grate gets smaller as you go down. The larger grains of soil are clay. The middle sized grains are silt and the small-fine grains of soil are sand. You can decide what type of soil it is through the percentages of clay, silt, and sand within the soil sample. This is found through the Soil Texture Diagram.

Our class went to the Ocmulgee River to collect data on the elevation changes in the water under the riverbank as well as collect data on the amount of clams in different areas of the river.

To collect elevation data, we took two poles that were tied together with a string that was 10ft long. When you stretch them across the bank, you take the sting and put it to the bottom of the first pole and make the string level across to the second pole when standing the poles up vertically. The difference in heighth of the two poles is the change in elevation from the first pole to the second. You would just continue this across the river.

To collect data on the amount of clams across the river in different spots, you take a box sifter and a shovel and shovel in a scoop of dirt from the bottom of the river in different spots. You would then sift out the dirt into the water and count the amount of clams you found in that particular area. Another point of interest was whether the clams were alive or dead. You can tell this by seeing whether the clams are open or closed.

We did this data collection and it is posted bellow on the google map of the area and through the graph and table of data.

Conclusions

The clams tended to be living in medium shallow depths of the river and with a slower current. There was not really many clams found in the faster current areas. The shallow areas of land had many clams but they were all dead. The currents usually were faster in the deeper areas of land in the river.

Some possible explanations for these results: Faster currents drag clams down the river so slower current areas are better habitats for them. Also, the shallower areas of land may be an easier access for animals such as birds to pray on the clams thus there being many clams but they are not living.
Michelle McEwenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04843512492220265100noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9194599378401437088.post-51291300826513381832011-09-24T10:58:00.000-07:002011-12-08T09:40:30.635-08:00Updated October 25th-Journey of My PlantHere is my plant....he is known as my plant. I went to Tanzania this summer for Mercer On Mission. We spent one week in Moshi, Tanzania. While in Moshi, we were working with an organization called KIWAKUKKI. The purpose of this organization is to provide support for women in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the Kilimanjaro region. I loved working with this organization. We met so many great people while in Moshi. I hope to be able to go back there and work with KIWAKUKKI. The Twiga Home was the place we stayed at during the time we were in Moshi. In the morning, we would walk from the Twiga Home down to KIWAKUKKI. The saturday we were there, we were able to walk downtown to the market area where you could buy almost anything you could think of. The people are so welcoming and loving there. That is my happy place and I hope I will get the chance to go back there in the future.
